12 mental traps holding you back

Your brain is a liar sabotaging you on the daily.

Don't let faulty patterns hold you back from growth.

Cognitive distortions are automatic thinking patterns your brain runs on repeat.

They helped our ancestors survive threats.

Today, they keep you stuck, anxious, and making decisions based on warped reality.

They're sneaky, common, and they keep you stuck.

But you can rewire them once you spot them.

Here are 12 to watch for and how to stay safe from them:

1/ Mind reading
❌ Assuming you know what others are thinking/feeling
✅ Ask directly instead of guessing what's in someone's head

2/ Negative focus
❌ Ignoring positive aspects & only seeing negative ones
✅ Write down three things that went well today before bed

3/ Catastrophizing
❌ Expecting the worst case scenario to happen to you
✅ Ask yourself what's most likely to happen, not what's most dramatic

4/ Labeling
❌ Labeling yourself or someone negatively
✅ Replace labels with specific behaviors you can actually change over time

5/ Should-thinking
❌ Having rigid rules or "shoulds" about things or people
✅ Replace "should" with "could" to open up more possibilities for yourself

6/ Overgeneralizing
❌ Believing a single negative event is a pattern
✅ Look for exceptions and times when the opposite was true

7/ Emotional reasoning
❌ Believing that how you feel is equal to reality
✅ Separate your feelings from facts and look for objective evidence

8/ Fortune-telling
❌ Thinking the future is set & you know what it is
✅ Remind yourself that you can't predict the future with certainty

9/ Personalization
❌ Feeling responsible for things you can't control
✅ Ask yourself what's actually within your control and what isn't

10/ Owning the truth
❌ Being certain you are right & your opinion is the truth
✅ Get curious about other perspectives and stay open to being wrong

11/ Just-world thinking
❌ Assuming that everything will be balanced fairly
✅ Accept that life isn't always fair and focus on what you can influence

12/ Control fallacy
❌ Assuming you can control everything in your life
✅ Practice letting go of things outside your control and focus your energy wisely

Your thoughts aren't always facts.

Learning to spot these patterns is the first step to thinking more clearly and acting more confidently.

Which one do you catch yourself doing most?
