Augmented reality art: opportunities and examples for artists and creatives

By Ainars Klavins

Augmented reality offers a new space for artists to express themselves, complement their artworks, or surround their work with interactive experiences. But, AR is not for the weary! It is for the curious, experimental, and pioneering. It is for creatives who are ready to jump into the unknown and get comfortable pursuing and establishing themselves and their art within an unmanned territory.

Since Overly was born, we’ve worked on numerous art projects for museums and individuals. We’ve also followed the sector’s happenings across the globe and have seen so many innovative ideas and new artists pop-up. Yet, the general public is still getting familiar with this tech, which means that there are vast opportunities for those new to merging art with technologies. Below, I’ll bust a couple of myths about using AR and offer inspiration and examples that can drive your imagination for teching-up your artworks — as long as you’re up for it.

You don’t have to hone your IT skills to become an augmented reality artist

I wanted to start with the above point, because, in my experience, artists often think that they need to be gurus of traditional art and tech-innate at the same time. This is absolutely not the case, because:

  1. There are different forms of augmented reality, including video and photo overlays. There are also platforms such as Overly app that allow people with no tech skills to put together their artworks with digital media. Bridging the gap between tech and art, such platforms help artists exploit basic levels of AR
  2. If you want to create animated and 3D experiences — collaborate. A lot of projects that we deliver are based on partnerships. There are illustrators, animators, audio producers, multimedia artists, videographers, 3D designers, and so the list goes on. It is usually multimedia artists who have a background in digital design or contemporary art that go it alone. Still, they need to find partners who provide augmented reality hosting services that meet their needs, which again means that you can never really go alone with this form of ARt
  3. Traditional artworks, even old-school paintings can serve as augmented reality markers. The art piece itself doesn’t have to be affected by its new augmented reality layer.

You do not have to pay a lot of money to digitize your ideas with augmented reality

This is another perception that is commonly associated with new technologies, including augmented reality. If we are talking about mobile augmented reality, I can say with confidence that you could host a whole exhibition for a couple of hundred bucks per month.

What costs, admittedly, in augmented reality is the creation of content. I’ve written a blog about AR marketing budgets, which applies pretty much to any sector. Even if you look at our pricing plan, you will see that the hosting services won’t break the bank. What costs is the content you want to create for augmented reality. That, however, depends on the type of collaboration and rate you have with your AR content creator, or what resources and time you are spending to create the content yourself. Here are 14 different types of content that you can create and retrieve using Overly app.

Two types of mobile augmented reality art: marker-based and markerless

I will give you inspo examples for each approach below. If you want in-depth understanding, you can read our blog on the differences between these terms to understand how marker-based and markerless AR works. But just to summarize, marker-based AR experience will be attached to another physical piece of content. This would most likely be an artwork or an exhibition promo. Markerless, on the other hand, would represent the whole experience, with digital content being placed based on GPS coordinates.

Augmented reality ideas for art projects

Awesome animated art through augmented reality

An excellent example of animated paintings comes from Mandy Sobo. You can find her on Instagram at @badportraits, although I assure you that “bad portraits” is precisely what you will not find on her feed.

Mandy is a visual artist, who works on a lot of different ideas, but her celebrity portrait exhibitions include augmented reality animations. Her work looks incredible without AR, but for those who enjoy interaction, it’s an awesome added value to see different AR stories that she’s created for her portraits. I really suggest you check out her Instagram.

Here is another example of animated artworks. In this news piece, you will see quite a few different animation approaches for inspiration.

Just to finish off this section, remember, animations can be both 2D and 3D, you just have to decide on what tells your story best and what resources you have. Here’s an example of 3D AR experiences.

Easy video AR, featuring author stories or behind the scenes

As mentioned at the beginning, there is no need to overcomplicate things at first. Something that AR is great at is showcasing video content in interactive ways.

Often, you may already have a video that could go with an artwork — it may be an interview on its meaning, it may be an interview with the author in general or some behind-the-scenes snapshot. You could even collate a behind-the-scenes image gallery, which is pretty simple to do but will give extra information to people exploring your art.

Last year we delivered an AR project that brought to life children’s poems. It featured animations, but there were also pieces that retrieved author stories in a form of basic head and shoulders interviews about their art piece. Here is a snapshot of the exhibition and you will be able to spot at 30 seconds how simple the interview files were. This example combines both animation and video, but it doesn’t have to be the case. You can just go for video.

More information through text and images in AR

Another simple way of implementing AR in your work is to share written stories about each piece. You may reveal a painting’s meaning through written information or tell a story about featured personalities. Or you could also let other art lovers know what you used to create the colors, what fabric and frame you chose.

For people who appreciate art and attend exhibitions, all this information will be of interest, and placing it within AR will allow you to create no interferences with the exhibition design, such as setting up screens, etc. Here is just one example of how this may look.

Bringing 3D objects to life for entertainment and education

I feel like the above examples are the most straightforward approach because these are all about bringing markers to life that are flat. However, you may be creating magnificent sculptures or decorating 3D objects. Augmented reality can bring those to life as well, to entertain and even to educate.

Here is an example of a large object — a car, which was brought to life for educational purposes at the Riga Motormuseum. This can give you a taste of how objects can be brought to life, and the layers created 1:1 to overlay the original piece. Note that this may require some extra collaborators to help.

Markerless augmented reality art can get you in Louvre

When it comes to markerless augmented reality, the digital content will most probably be your stand-alone artwork. I do think that this is of most interest for contemporary, digital artists and designers, whose art is already created and hosted digitally. Augmented reality allows those digital pieces to be brought to real-life settings through people’s mobile screens. An excellent example here is from Marjan Moghaddam below on how 3D virtual sculptures fit into a museum setting.

Another artist I’d like to highlight in this context is Gints Gabrāns, the author of augmented reality art application SAN.app. Thanks to the creative and unique freedom that augmented reality offers, he has placed his work in some of the world’s most famous museums. No approval necessary. As Gints explains: “If I was to place a physical sculpture somewhere, I would need to abide by the local laws, sign commercial contracts, or coordinate my activities with local councils and governments. When I initially started to create projects in SAN, the whole world was my playground. “

AR art can add layers to your city’s walls

As we’ve gotten out of the exhibition mindset and gotten ourselves more into the “world is your oyster” mentality. I would like to finish off with one of the booming augmented reality art forms, which is AR graffitis and augmented city objects and posters.

While street artists are the leaders in taking up augmented reality, just for the sake of something different, I would like to bring forward an example from the marketing world, where Burger King burnt their competitors’ ads in AR. This just shows that, first of all, AR doesn’t need any permissions, and secondly, it can interact with existing art.

To finish off, I just want to emphasize that one of the challenges for augmented reality across all sectors is quality content. I see that artists can address this issue using their creative nature to build valuable experiences. That’s why I hope this blog helped to clarify some of the options for those who want to merge tech with art and were looking for ideas. If you do have something to add or an artist, you wish we’d feature, leave a comment below or connect with me on LinkedIn.

Unsplash

Data Trusts

  1. Улучшенная мобильная широкополосная связь: скоростная передача потокового видео в соцсетях и онлайн-сервисах с минимальными задержками в передаче сигнала (всего 1–2 мс);
  2. Масштабный интернет вещей: по данным Accenture, с помощью 5G станет возможна поддержка до 1 млн устройств на кв км;

  • поддержка новых сервисов и приложений — включая высоконагруженные — в рамках локальной сети;
  • более высокая скорость и уровень обслуживания уже имеющихся сервисов (например, потоковое видео в 8К);
  • возможность обслуживать больше клиентов в высоконагруженных средах;

ThyssenKrupp Elevator,

(CaaS — Calculation As A Service) (SaaS — Software As A Service), (IaaS — Infrastructure As A Service) (PaaS — Platform As A Service).

I-VISION Stunning Apple Glass concept shows headset that puts a computer on your EYES

Designer Iskander Utebayev has mocked up designs for a possible Apple Glass productCredit: Iskander Utebayev

A FUTURISTIC "Apple Glass" headset could totally replace your iPhone – by giving you augmented reality cyber-vision.

Amazing concept footage of the rumoured headset has been mocked up by a skilled designer, giving us a glimpse of our sci-fi futures.

Apple has been expected to release "smart specs" that let you see computer-generated images for years.

And some insiders have suggested the tech may be launching soon.

Now designer Iskander Utebayev has mocked up concept designs showing off what the headset might look like.

The genius system lets you see apps and games – and even a virtual keyboard – all floating in the air in front of you.

Very cool augmented reality glasses concept by Iskander Utebayev. Would you wear these?

You can reach out and touch these virtual screens, just like in sci-fi film Minority Report.

The long-rumoured Apple Glass specs are reportedly designed to overlay computer-generated images onto the real world around you.

Augmented reality is when virtual images are placed on top of real-world views.

A simple example is a Snapchat filter, or the Pokémon Go game.

Putting AR inside a pair of spectacles could be the next step in portable computing, potentially replacing the smartphone.

Earlier this year, respected industry analyst and leaker Jon Prosser says that these devices are going to be called Apple Glass.

And they're said to retail for $499 – which is about £410 in the UK, though £499 seems likelier.

Speaking on his Front Page Tech show on YouTube, Prosser said that prescription lenses will be available for an additional cost.

And he says that they could be announced as soon as September, alongside the iPhone 12.

You could replace your iPhone or MacBook with a pair of Apple Glass specsCredit: Iskander Utebayev

However, he also thinks it's more likely that the Apple Glass will be announced in March 2021 – if social distancing is still in place for September.

In any case, the Apple Glass headset isn't expected to land in stores until the final quarter of 2021.

Prosser previously claimed that the Apple Glass will be 5G-ready.

That means they'll reportedly be capable of supporting the ultra-fast internet speeds offered by new 5G networks.

Constantly scanning the environment and adding sophisticated CGI onto the real-world could require very fast internet speeds – which would justify the addition of 5G.

It would also mean that the glasses would be capable of being used even when apart from a paired iPhone.

The Apple Glasses are expected to look like traditional spectacles, which would be a contrast to bulky AR and VR headsets we've seen previously.

Apple has invested a lot in virtual tech in recent years, crafting handing out tools for creating AR and VR tools such as ARKit and RealityKit, as well as creative tools like Reality Composer and Reality Converter.

It's also loaded a LiDAR Scanner - used for AR and VR tools - onto the new iPad Pro, and will likely do the same for its upcoming iPhones.

Apple hasn't confirmed plans to debut any smart glasses just yet, but it's likely that the tech giant is working on such a device.

Apple Glass could be the next stage of personal computingCredit: Iskander Utebayev

Most of its competitors have already dabbled in virtual reality and augmented reality, including Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Samsung, LG, and HTC.

Previous reports have suggested the new device uses a "catadioptric system" that uses curved mirrors and lenses to combine refraction and reflection.

This means that Apple could ditch the magnifying lenses you find in most traditional VR headsets, potentially reducing the overall weight.

In a patent that surfaced on the web last year, Apple admitted that current virtual reality and augmented reality headsets are too heavy.

"If care is not taken, a head-mounted display may be cumbersome and tiring to wear," the firm said. "Extended use of a head-mounted display with this type of optical system may be uncomfortable."

5 technology trends for the roaring 20s, part 2: AI, Knowledge Graphs, infinity and beyond

You don't have to be a fortune teller to identify AI as the key trend for the 2020s. But there is nuance regarding AI hardware and software that deserves to be highlighted.

By for Big on Data

Picking up from where we left off with part one of the top technology trends for the 2020s, here is what will shape the data landscape for the years to come.

2. AI: It's all about Data and Hardware

The last part of the 2010s has been all about AI, and the 2020s will not be any different. We will see AI widening its reach, and impacting every conceivable field. Having already seen the AI hype rise, however, we must also be prepared for a backlash. And it's very important to be aware of what "AI" actually means.
In essence, what we call AI today is an umbrella term for various pattern matching techniques. Machine learning and its various subdomains, such as deep learning, essentially boil down to pattern matching. We've seen several breakthroughs in the 2010s, but the seeds for most techniques and algorithms have been planted decades ago and remain essentially the same.
Still, we have seen the performance of AI systems in many domains going from being worse than human, to catching up and surpassing humans. How is that possible? The answer is twofold: Data and compute.
The digitization of nearly all aspects of human activity has led to an explosion in the volumes of data being generated. Algorithms now have much more data to work with, and that alone means they can perform much better. In parallel, however, progress was made in domains such as image recognition: adjustments in neural networks, brought about by vibrant communities, have boosted the accuracy of the algorithms. ImageNet is a good example of this.

Much of what's being sold as "AI" today is snake oil. It does not and cannot work. Recently, Arvind Narayanan, a Princeton Professor, made waves by calling this out.
AI is continuing to make inroads in new domains at a breakneck pace. In 2019 alone, we've seen great progress in domains such as natural language processing, games, and common sense reasoning, to name but a few. New achievements in result quality and execution speed have been made almost monthly. The amount of resources dedicated is staggering, and research is progressing faster than ever. So, should we all be preparing for the brave new AI world? Well, maybe not so fast.
The problem with the AI frenzy is the divide between the haves and the have nots is widening. And not just because of the resources and expertise the big players have. It's a self-reinforcing loop of sorts: Being data-driven, designing and producing data-driven products means these products not only can have an edge, but they also bring in more data as they operate
As there is an evolutionary link connecting data and AI, more data is used to develop better AI, leading to better products, more data, and so on. An archetypal and widely recognized example of this is Facebook, but it's not the only one. When the likes of the Economist are calling for a new approach to antitrust rules for the data economy, this should be a cause for concern.
Data, however, is just one part of the AI equation. The other part is hardware. Without the tremendous progress in hardware, the 2010s have seen, AI would not be possible. Access to the compute power needed to process the massive amounts of data needed for machine learning used to be a privilege reserved for the select few.
While the kind of hardware that Big Tech has access to remains beyond comprehension for most, democratization of sorts seems to have transcribed. The combination of cloud, with its on-demand access to processing power, and specialized hardware for AI workloads, has made AI chips accessible to more organizations than ever, assuming they can afford it.

Cerebras's "Wafer-Scale Engine" takes up almost all the area of a 12-inch silicon wafer, making it 57 times the size of Nvidia's largest graphics processing unit.
Cerebras Systems.
The big innovator, and winner, in the 2010s AI hardware was NVIDIA. The company that most people came to know as a maker of GPUs, specialized hardware typically used by gamers for fast graphics rendering, has reinvented itself as an AI superpower. The architecture of GPUs, it turns out, is very well suited to running AI workloads.
Intel was becoming complacent in its dominance of traditional CPU hardware, and other GPU makers failed to execute, so NVIDIA rose to become the leader in AI hardware. That, however, is not set in stone, and the hardware space is already seeing rapid innovation.
While NVIDIA is dominating AI hardware and has built a software ecosystem around it too, waves of disruption are hitting the AI chip market. Just a few days before the closing of the 2010s, Intel stroke back by acquiring Habana Labs. Habana Labs is one of many startups in the AI chip market, looking to come up with new designs, built from the ground up to accommodate AI workloads.
Even though for many Habana Labs is an unknown, its chips are already used in production by the likes of cloud vendors and autonomous vehicle makers. GraphCore, which became the first AI chip unicorn in late 2018, has recently announced its chips are now used in Microsoft Azure Cloud. Far from over, the AI chip race is only just beginning.

1. The Future is Graph, Knowledge Graph

Up until the beginning of the 2010s, the world was mostly running on relational databases and spreadsheets. To a large extent, it still does. But if the 2010s brought the first traces of dissent in the monoculture of tabular data structures, the 2020s will bring the final nail in the coffin. The NoSQL wave of databases has largely succeeded in getting developers, administrators, CIOs, CTOs, and business people out of their comfort zone, and instilled the "best tool for the job" mindset.
Polyglot persistence, as is the lingo for using data models and data management interchangeably depending on the task at hand, is becoming the new normal. After relational, key-value, document, columnar, and time-series databases, the latest link in this evolutionary proliferation of data structures is graph. Graph databases and knowledge graphs have been making waves and being included in hype cycles for the last couple of years.
While it's understandable why many people tend to think of graph as a new technology, the truth is this technology is at least 20 years old. And it has been largely initiated by none other than Tim Berners Lee, who is also credited as the inventor of the web, in 2001 with the publication of his Semantic Web manifesto in the Scientific American. Lee also coined the term Giant Global Graph, to describe the next stage in the evolution of the web.
Having been into this technology since the early 2000s, it's exhilarating to see it getting steam with technical progress, funding, and use cases piling up to a snowball effect. It is also amusing to see graph-washing beginning to commence. In essence, progress in graph is happening along the trajectory of progress in machine learning.
It's not so much that there was a major breakthrough in the technology that made it feasible, but more about the right conditions that made it boom. Many of the concepts, formats, standards, and technology enabling graph databases and knowledge graphs to flourish today have been developed over more than 20 years. What has brought on the perfect graph storm is a combination of factors.

Google, NASA, and leading organizations from every domain are using knowledge graphs to manage and leverage vast amounts of data

Like AI, the data explosion has contributed to bringing graph in the fore. Now that Big is no longer a qualifier for Data, because we have mastered the art of storing lots of it, the question really is how to get value out of data. Leveraging connections in data is a prominent way of getting value out of data and graph is the best way of leveraging connections.
This is why graph databases excel in use cases that require finding connections in data, such as anti-fraud or master data management. This is why graph analytics, with algorithms such as centrality or PageRank that are based in accounting for nodes and edges, can offer valuable insights in connected datasets. As the terminology seems to still be in flux for many newcomers in this field, a short history lesson, and grounding in semantics, may be called for.
Graph analytics such as PageRank can be applied to data stored in any back end. Graph databases are back ends designed to accommodate graph data structures, offering specialized query languages, APIs, and oftentimes storage structures. Knowledge graphs, on the other hand, are a specific subclass of graphs, also called semantic graphs, that come with metadata, schema, and global identifier capabilities.
Google has played a key role in the rise of graphs, and knowledge graphs. As the web itself is a prime use case for graphs, PageRank was born. As crawling and categorizing content on the web is a very hard problem to solve without semantics and metadata, Google embraced them, and coined the term Knowledge Graph, in 2012. This, and the widespread adoption of schema.org that came with it, marked the beginning of the meteoric rise of graph technology and knowledge graphs.
Knowledge graphs can address key challenges such as data governance but ultimately, they can serve as the digital substrate to unify the philosophy of knowledge acquisition and organization with the practice of data management in the digital age. The NASAs and the Morgan Stanleys of the world are managing ontologies, and utilizing knowledge graphs.
Graphs and knowledge graphs cross-cut into AI, too. Much of the AI hardware and software for the 2020s utilizes graph data structures. A combination of bottom-up, pattern matching techniques with top-down, knowledge-based approaches is the most promising way for AI to continue to make progress.
As Nathan Benaich, author of the State of AI Report put it, "Domain knowledge can effectively help a deep learning system bootstrap its knowledge, by encoding primitives instead of forcing the model to learn these from scratch." Knowledge graphs are the best technology we have for encoding domain knowledge, and the world's most comprehensive knowledge base -- the web -- already functions as such.
Knowledge Graph is a technology that enables other technologies to accelerate their growth, and it also enables humans to take stock of their own knowledge. This is why the future is Knowledge Graph.

To infinity and beyond

Looking back, it becomes clear how far we have come in the relatively short span of the last decade. Counter-intuitive as this may seem, however, we are not certain this is a good thing. Somewhere along the way, technological progress left human ability to monitor, comprehend and digest technology in the dust. In the dawn of this new decade, we seem to be engrossed in the never-ending race for more: More data, more processing power, more technology.
The belief that more equals better seems to be firmly ingrained in most of us. And the signs of what's coming seem to tell the story of not just more, but immeasurably more. Quantum computing is progressing in leaps, promising to unlock compute power beyond our wildest imagination. DNA storage seems set to do the same for storage. More data and compute than we would know what to do with. To infinity and beyond. But what for, and for whom?
Is this technology making us happier, and bringing us closer, or is it alienating and distressing us? Where are all the huge productivity gains going? Who is in control, who gets to call the shots, and why?
AI, for example, is already being used to make critical decisions. Who gets to build those systems, on what data, and according to whose ethics and criteria? Should society as a whole have some sort of control over it? How could society even dream of controlling a technology it hardly understands, and in what way? Are we sure more technology is the solution to technologically induced issues? What is a moral compass for the 21st century?
For the time being, these are questions few people are prepared to tackle. But if the 2020s develop on the trajectory they are set on, more and more of us will have to face those questions head-on.
