You're Not 'Smart Enough' is The Biggest Lie You've Been Told

Most people have been told for most of their life that there’s only one type of intelligence. You’re either book smart or you’re not. All black or white. No gray area.

Shocker:

That information is false.

There's more than one type of intelligence, and being 'book smart' is just one of them.

In fact, there are at least eight types of intelligence, and there could be more, according to psychologists at the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning, Northern Illinois University.

It's not that you're not 'academically gifted.' The conventional education system is probably not the best fit for you.

The old Math and English-based system is the problem - not you!

To properly test your brain's learning powers and discover your intelligence type, you need a more holistic test like Brainety (more on that later). Brainety doesn't just test you. It arms you with the tools to use your brain in the best way.

The single intelligence narrative is wrong, and many researchers agree.

The Eight Types of Intelligence

The idea that there are several types of human intelligence was first introduced in 1983 by Howard Gardner, an American psychologist at Harvard University. He called it the Multiple Intelligences Theory.

He said that people "… possess different kinds of minds and therefore learn, remember, perform, understand in different ways."

For example, some are better at controlling their bodies than others. Some others pick up new languages really fast. Yet another group of humans is naturally gifted at identifying great music.

The best thing about multiple intelligences is that everyone has every type of intelligence. But we are much stronger in one or two than in others.

Not understanding your natural strengths could mean you've chosen a less favorable career path. Maybe you're not suited to sitting 8+ hours today writing analytical reports. Maybe you should be working for a record label, discovering new musical talent!

These are the eight types of intelligence in the Multiple Intelligences Theory and their natural career choices:

Visual-spatial Intelligence

The ability to think, imagine and create art, design, and structures. People with this intelligence can visualize objects from different perspectives and turn them into reality.

Most likely career choices as:

Architects, painters, pilots, graphic designers, surgeons, and fashion designers.

Verbal-linguistic Intelligence

This means an ability to really understand words. People with this intelligence quickly grasp the meaning of words, the order of words, sounds, rhythms, and everything else about words. It is super easy for people like this to memorize information and write stories, poems, etc.

Most likely career choices as:

Poets, lawyers, journalists, English professors, and story writers.

Bodily-kinesthetic Intelligence

This refers to an ability to use the body really well. Whether athletic prowess or powerful dancing, people with this intelligence level are entirely in control of their bodies.

Most likely career choices as:

Sportspeople, dancers, actors, builders, and physical therapists.

Musical Intelligence

Sensitivity to rhythm, pitch, meter, melody, and everything music-related. These guys know how to make great music, like Beethoven.

Most likely career choices as:

DJ, songwriter, composer, and music teacher.

Logical-mathematical Intelligence

This means being really good at solving puzzles and math problems and figuring out how things work. People who are really good at this can look at things and see patterns and connections that others might miss.

Most likely career choices as:

Scientists, engineers, programmers, and data analysts.

Interpersonal Intelligence

A strong ability to interact well with others and to understand and communicate well with people.

Most likely career choices as:

Salesperson, politician, negotiator, and publicist.

Intrapersonal Intelligence

Everyone should have intrapersonal intelligence. This explains the ability to be self-aware and genuinely understand your feelings and motivations. Like the others, some people are exceptionally gifted with this type of intelligence.

Most likely career choices as:

Therapist, philosopher, and counselor.

Naturalistic Intelligence

This means an ability to understand nature really well.

Most likely career choices as:

Animal doctor, biologist, farmer, and geologist.
