The Sunflower Door in Prague, Czech Republic

The Sunflower Door (also known as the "Sunflower Gate") is a renowned Art Nouveau architectural masterpiece located in the heart of Prague’s Old Town (Staré Město) at Haštalská 1072/6.

Key Architectural Details
  • Built: Circa 1900.
  • Architects: Designed by Osvald Polívka and Václav Haver. Polívka was a leading figure of the Prague Secession movement, also famous for designing the Municipal House.
  • Design: The doorway is characterized by its vibrant sunflower motifs, featuring intricate wrought-iron stems and petals that "grow" toward a round stained-glass window.
  • Special Feature: The top circular window (oculus) often contains a clock set into a stained-glass fanlight, framed by radiating metal "petals".
Historical Context
The building was constructed by the grandfather of the first democratic president of the Czech Republic, Václav Havel, whose family owned a prosperous construction company and were patrons of Czech culture. It remains one of the city's best-preserved examples of how everyday functional objects were elevated into fine art during the Secessionist era.
Visiting Information
The door is located on a quiet street just a few steps from Old Town Square and is easily accessible for tourists. While the interior is a private residential apartment building, the exterior gate is free to view from the sidewalk.
