What do lab-grown meat, a holographic museum guide and a supercharged version of Amazon’s Alexa have in common?

They’re all breakthrough technologies that are likely to shape our lives in the near future, according to a list published by the World Economic Forum. Selected by a panel of scientists and experts, each one has been identified as having the potential to be disruptive by altering deep-rooted practices or shaking up whole industries.

While we’ve all heard how technologies like artificial intelligence and quantum computing are set to transform our everyday lives, the coming change can seem like a nebulous concept that’s hard to define. In this list, experts seek to pinpoint the breakthroughs that will take effect within three to five years.

Here are the technologies generating the most excitement among experts this year:

Augmented reality

Overlaying information and animation on to real-world images is set to go mainstream. While the technology isn’t new - many of us have used a car display with guides to aid parking or played the game PokémonGo - it’s set to take a leap forward in terms of sophistication and everyday use. In the future, augmented reality will help surgeons visualize tissues beneath a patient’s skin in three dimensions and conjure up holographic-like guides to take you through a museum.

Personalised medicine

Advanced diagnostic tools are set to tailor your medicines to you, detecting and quantifying multiple signs of a disorder to decide how likely you are to contract a disease. Several advanced diagnostic tools are already in use for cancer. One helps women with certain types of breast cancer avoid chemotherapy. It can also be used to diagnose endometriosis, without the need for surgery, as well as brain disorders, like autism, Parkinson's and Alzheimer’s, that are currently diagnosed by an assessment of symptoms.

AI-led molecular design

The days of science relying on educated predictions - or guesses - to create new drugs and materials may become a thing of the past as artificial intelligence takes over. Instead of messy experiments, machine-learning algorithms will analyse all known past tests, discern patterns and predict what new molecules are likely to work. As well as speeding up the process and reducing chemical waste, it will help the pharmaceutical industry identify and develop new drugs at a rapid pace.

More capable digital helpers

If you’re becoming reliant on Siri and Alexa to switch on your music or give you the weather forecast, you’ll soon be able to access far more sophisticated digital aides. Powered by AI, the latest technology will mine the cloud and outline various arguments on topics that are important to you, without prior training. And it’s not difficult to think of all the ways this technology could help in the workplace: for example helping doctors find research relevant to a complicated medical case and then debating the merits of the different ways of treating it.

Implantable drug-making cells

For people who have to take medicine regularly, the idea of having a tiny drug factory implanted in the body is probably very appealing. At some point in your life you’ve probably needed to take a course of drugs and struggled to remember when to take them. Until now, implant use was limited because users also needed to take immune-suppressing drugs to prevent their bodies attacking the implant. Now the technology is sophisticated enough to work without being rejected by the immune system and could transform the treatment of long-term conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, tuberculosis, diabetes, cancer and chronic pain.

Gene drive

Changing genes knowingly can be controversial and often goes hand-in-hand with ethical questions. And while gene drives - natural or engineered genetic elements that spread through populations quickly - are no different, they offer enormous power to fight disease or eliminate species of pests such as mosquitoes that transmit malaria. Such efforts got a shot in the arm in recent years with the introduction of CRISPR gene-editing, which makes it easy to insert genetic material into specific spots on chromosomes.

Algorithms for quantum computers

Computers that use quantum mechanics to perform calculations can solve some problems far more efficiently than a conventional computer. While early use was held back by disruptions to their function, the latest research has improved that and a growing number of academics are developing programmes and quantum software. Once refined, powerful quantum computers could simulate nature and help design materials.

Plasmonic materials

Is this the technology that will make Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak a reality? While that is probably still a way off, plasmonic devices that manipulate electron clouds and light at the nanoscale are set to increase magnetic memory storage and the sensitivity of biological sensors. Several companies are developing new products, including a device that can distinguish viral from bacterial infections and a heat-assisted magnetic recording device. Light-activated nanoparticles are also being investigated for their ability to treat cancer without damaging healthy tissue.

Lab-grown meat

Would you eat a burger that you knew had been grown in a lab? Meat grown from cultured cells could cut the environmental costs of producing meat and eliminate the unethical treatment suffered by animals that are raised for food. Start-ups like Mosa Meat, Memphis Meats, SuperMeat and Finless Foods have already attracted millions in funding, even though the production costs remain very high and taste-test results have been mixed. With the technology improving all the time, duck, chicken, and beef produced without slaughter could be on its way to a kitchen near you sooner than you think.

Electroceuticals

Could we cut down our reliance on drugs to treat most health conditions? Some say yes, with electroceuticals offering the ability to treat ailments using electrical impulses. One approach, targeting the vagus nerve - the system that sends signals from the brain to most organs - is poised to transform care for many conditions, since it has the potential to regulate the immune system. This has been used to treat epilepsy and depression for more than a decade, and now looks set to aid sufferers of migraines, obesity and rheumatoid arthritis.

Dataism. Задачи — в диапазоне от проверки таксистов шеринговых сервисов до поимки правонарушителей. На установку личности журналиста BBC, протестировавшего платформу, ушло, к примеру, всего семь минут. Face++ участвует в проекте системы «умного» видеонаблюдения в КНР, которую правозащитники считают инструментом тотального контроля над гражданами.

GAN. Генеративно-состязательная сеть (GAN) — передовой край разработок искусственного интеллекта. Это алгоритм взаимодействия двух нейросетей: первая генерирует новую информацию на основе изученной базы данных, вторая сравнивает эту информацию с оригиналом и доводит ее до максимального уровня сходства. Своеобразная нейро-дуэль дает результат высокого качества: например, написанная GAN картина на аукционе Christie’s была продана за рекордные $432 тыс.

HQ Trivia. Онлайн-викторину HQ Trivia авторитетные СМИ называли «медиа будущего» и предрекали проекту трансформацию в крупный бизнес. Oreon. В ноябре зонд InSight сел на поверхность Марса и начал свою исследовательскую миссию. Успех NASA вновь подстегнул разговоры о пилотируемом полете к Красной планете. Агентство осторожно говорит о такой возможности: по его расчетам, в лучшем случае человек ступит на поверхность Марса в 2030-х. Это не отменяет последовательной подготовки к исторической миссии: уже весной 2019-го пройдет первый пробный пуск с прерыванием полета космического корабля Oreon — этот аппарат в будущем должен доставить астронавтов к желанной цели.

PD-1. Рецептор на поверхности лимфоцитов, активация которого подавляет их активность, — открытие лауреата Нобеля-2018 по медицине Тасуку Хондзе. Вместе с коллегой Джеймсом Аллисоном иммунолог создал новый подход к терапии рака. Ученые объяснили, как можно бороться с подавлением активности клеток иммунной системы со стороны раковых клеток. Quayside. «Пристань» — проект «умного города» от стартапа Sidewalk Labs, «дочки» Alphabet. В предместье Торонто компания создает образ будущего — несколько гектаров земли займут кварталы на 5 тыс. человек, внутри которых будут организованы движение беспилотных машин и автобусов, роботизированная уборка и переработка мусора и другие инновационные урбанистические решения. Все данные о городской среде и ее жителях будут собирать размещенные по всему периметру сенсоры и датчики. Начало строительства намечено на 2019 год.

Red Dead Redemption 2. Новинка студии Rockstar Games, сиквел вестерна Red Dead Redemption осенью покорил геймеров всего мира и собрал за первые выходные кассу $725 млн. Supermicro. Производитель серверного оборудования из США в этом году попал в эпицентр шпионского скандала: источники Bloomberg рассказали агентству, будто материнские платы, которые Supermicro получал из Китая и потом в комплектах поставлял Apple, Amazon, ЦРУ и другим американским клиентам, были оснащены микрочипом, собирающим информацию с внутренних корпоративных сетей. Предполагаемые жертвы утечек все опровергли, но подозрения в отношении КНР не развеялись.

Teknasyon. Турецкий разработчик в этом году выстрелил на российском рынке с приложением GetContact. Сервис для проверки незнакомых телефонных номеров полюбился пользователям опцией установки собственных никнеймов в чужих записных книжках. Однако за развлекательной составляющей многие не заметили, как сдали Teknasyon персональные данные — номера и имена. К середине марта компания собрала более 3,5 млрд логов по всему миру, а до 1 марта имела право передавать информацию третьим лицам и использовать ее в маркетинговых целях.

UFC. Если в 2017-м самым обсуждаемым поединком года был рэп-баттл, то в этом году дошло до драки — бой под эгидой UFC за пояс чемпиона смешанных боевых искусств в легком весе у ирландца Конора Макгрегора выиграл россиянин Хабиб Нурмагомедов. А после еще и устроил массовую потасовку рядом с клеткой, чуть было не добившись собственной дисквалификации. Все эти страсти не только позволили бойцу заработать более $2 млн, но и побили рекорд «Матч ТВ» по доле смотрения спортивной трансляции с показателем выше 60%.

VAR. Главная технология чемпионата мира по футболу в России, система видеопомощи арбитрам — настоящая подрывная инновация для одного из самых традиционных видов спорта. По оценке ФИФА, точность судейских решений, влияющих на исход матчей, на ЧМ выросла до 99,3% со средних 95%. Уже в следующем году VAR будет внедрен в самом престижном и богатом турнире мира — Лиге чемпионов УЕФА (призовой фонд сезона 2018/2019 — более $2 млрд), а также в чемпионате России.

Wizards Unite. Хотя хайп вокруг Pokémon GO с момента релиза в 2016 году заметно спал, AR-игра не перестает приносить деньги разработчику Niantic. В октябре она стала второй по доходам в мобильном сегменте на американском рынке, а месяцем ранее перешагнула порог совокупной выручки в $2 млрд (данные SuperData и Apptopia). XXXTentacion. Убитый в июне рэпер Джасей XXXTentacion Онфрой проживает образцовую для цифровой эпохи жизнь после смерти: новые записи собирают миллионы стриминговых прослушиваний (в совокупности — 5,5 млрд; Nielsen), клипы — десятки миллионов просмотров на YouTube, а к декабрю подоспел и целый новый альбом при участии Канье Уэста. Рэп, насилие, наркотики и деньги — идеальные ингредиенты успеха у циничного поколения «янгстеров». В России их кумиров, правда, стали регулярно «прессовать» силовики.

Yield. Австралийский стартап при поддержке Microsoft предоставляет фермерам «умную» предиктивную аналитику для ухода за сельхозугодьями: софт с использованием алгоритмов машинного обучения, big data и сеть сенсоров умеют предсказывать проблемы до того, как те станут видны человеческому глазу. Так можно вовремя предотвратить появление вредителей, засуху и другие катаклизмы. Сегмент подобных инноваций в с/х к 2025 году составит $2,6 млрд, прогнозирует Research & Markets.

Z-Wave 700 Series. Система управления «умным домом» от Sigma Designs — одна из передовых разработок в нише «практического» интернета вещей. Микрочип в ее основе обладает уникальными свойствами энергоэффективности (до десяти лет работы на одной батарейке) и радиуса охвата (более 90 м — «умным» будет не только дом, но и окружающее пространство). The world keeps getting bigger. Every serious traveler I know says their wish list grows longer, not shorter, every time they dip into a new region or hear about where someone else has been.

So how to decide? What’s newly (or still) safe or newly uncovered? What’s hovering between charming sleepiness and overdeveloped soullessness? What must we see before it changes forever? Which places will transform us? And where can we get away from it all and finally get to breathe?

I put those questions to experts at several high-end travel companies. These super-agents knows what they’re talking about, keeping their ears on their clients’ interests and their eyes on the adventures they themselves have in every corner of the world. Here’s what on their radar for next year.

Koh Russey, Cambodia

There was already more to the country than Angkor Wat, but 2018 is likely to be the year that makes that known to the world. John Spence, US president of  Scott Dunn, says, “an array of new luxury hotel openings will allow travelers to explore some of the lesser-known regions,” some with bone-white beaches. Six Senses and Alila are setting up shop on Krabey Island and Koh Russey, Rosewood is opening a hotel in Phnom Penh (along with Siem Reap), and Bill Bensley’sShinta Mani Wild tented camp is one of the most hotly anticipated openings in the world.

The Yucatan Peninsula and Mexico City

Black Tomato is a champion of Mexico beyond the expected tourists stops. They’re directing guests toward the interior of the Yucatan, where they can book a full-day helicopter trip to view the Monarch butterfly migration, spend some time (or some days) at the new high-luxe Chablé resort and ride a private hot air balloon over the Teotihuacan ruins, then head back to Mexico City, a dynamic metropolis that has been named as a World Design Capital for 2018.

Indagare founder Melissa Biggs Bradley says Bolivia is “pulsing with the energy of a country on the verge. While the destination is known for its dramatic, otherworldly scenery—the Salar de Uyuni salt flats could be called the southern hemisphere’s Iceland—the cultural capital, La Paz, is just hitting its stride and recently emerged as a foodie capital.” Noma co-founder Claus Meyer’s social-good-minded Gustu now makes the 50 Best list, new destination restaurants are opening, and the new luxury hotels include Atix.

Scott Dunn’s Spence is excited about the less explored parts of the country. Asilia’s new Jabali Ridge in Ruaha National Park—the country’s biggest and least visited national park—is “the ultimate in luxury lodges and has bought a whole new level of accommodation to this area,” he says. Selous, the other compelling game reserve in the south, also has a new Asilia in the form of “a stunning tented camp called Roho Ya Selous,where you can do wonderful walking and boating safaris.” 

Hobart Harbor

Going Down Under has never been easier, thanks to new flight routes from London to Perth and Houston to Sydney. Now it’s time to get off the beaten path, says the cofounder and owner of Black Tomato, Tom Marchant. “The region of Hobart epitomizes Tasmania’s remote location and showcases a rugged wilderness, punctuated by a thriving arts scene, hip foodie haunts and flavor-packed wines rivaling those of the mainland. Countless galleries, such as the Mona, position the island as an exciting destination in its own right,” and new places to stay include the urban Macq 01 Hotel and adventure-mindedTruffle Lodge.

“It’s no secret that America’s southern cities are having a moment,” says Indagare’s Biggs Bradley. “Asheville has a character that is at once hipster and classic Americana.” Cradled by the Blue Ridge Mountains, the city is home to gorgeous scenery (including a lovely botanical garden), historic mansions (the 19th-century Biltmore Estate is the largest private home in the world) and a remarkable arts scene. “Don’t miss Woolworth Walk to shop the works of dozens of local artisans and stop for a milkshake at the preserved luncheonette counter. But Asheville isn’t limited to classic cuisine; hungry travelers can enjoy everything from tapas to innovative cocktails to Asian street food.”

Safari in Chad

In 2018 GeoEx will lead its first clients into a country wildly devoid of tourism to explore Zakouma National Park, home to one of the world’s most diverse grassland ecosystems and a massive rehabilitated herd of elephants—a great conservation success story. “We are one of the few tour operators that have been awarded private, weeklong trips in the park,” explains GeoEx safari expert Starla Estrada. “We’ve enlisted a dynamic duo of leaders: legendary safari guide Brad Hansen and Royal Geographic Society member Kingsley Holgate, a globally respected expert on remote African tribes.”

New direct flights from São Paulo to Jericoacoara are opening up this hard-to-reach part of the county. Previously accessible only with 4×4s, motorbikes and dune buggies, Jericoacoara is a tiny fishing village on the northern coast, which until 20 years ago had no road network or electricity and money hardly ever changed hands. The best hotel is the Chili Beach, a laid-back boutique resort situated on the edge of the village. “It’s cool, quirky and boasting brilliant yet discreet service,” says Scott Dunn’s Spence. Also, beginning in January, Americans will be able to apply for electronic visas online.

Technically part of the Kingdom of Denmark, this archipelago is an autonomous country with a culture (and language and currency) all its own. “These cultural offerings are front and center on the global stage at the moment, but swarms of tourists haven’t yet descended,” says Indagare’s Biggs Bradley of the 18 islands between the Norwegian Fjords, Scottish Highlands and Iceland. “Though the entire nation is home to just about 50,000 people, it has fabulous restaurants, one with a Michelin star, that benefit from the islands’ phenomenal access to some of the world’s best seafood.” It also has landscape of surreal mountains and cliffs, countless waterfalls, grass-roofed houses and dramatic oceans—and countless proud puffins, shaggy sheep and diminutive Faroese ponies.

Aysen

Aysén, Chile

“Nowhere is quite so adventurous, and untouched, as Aysén, Northern Patagonia’s final frontier,” says Black Tomato’s Marchant. The remote, sparsely populated land of vast glaciers, snow-capped peaks and jagged fjords is “a place to disconnect from the world and revel in the splendid isolation that its otherworldly, landscapes inspire.” It’s where Black Tomato’s travel planners send guests who want to escape the crowds of Torres del Paine.

Milan is no longer the stopover destination that it once was, according to Indagare’s Biggs Bradley. “The country’s most modern metropolis has bloomed in recent years as a design mecca. The recent openings of the Prada Foundation andArmani/Silos museum, plus the ongoing success of the yearly Salone del Mobile furniture fair, have put Milan officially on the world's stage. Add in a collection of ultra-luxurious hotels, fabulous (and innovative) Italian food and some of the best architecture in Europe, and Milan’s momentum shows no signs of stopping.”

Ace trek leader Vassi Koutsaftis, who has guided many of GeoEx’s pioneering adventures, is always on the lookout for ways to take intrepid travelers deeper into Tibet. He created a new trip to do just that, focusing a moderate four-day trek on lush Yangpachen Valley, the 800-year-old Tsurphu Monastery and the colorful celebrations of an annual Buddhist festival. Bookending the trek is time in Lhasa, Shigatse, and Gyantse, where Vassi shares the highlight sites, as well as his favorite local haunts.

Black Tomato’s Marchant says this country is “ripe for discovery. Alongside these wonderful creatures, Malawi’s Nkhotakota Reserve has received hundreds of other animals. Next year will see the return of theLake of Stars music festival and the opening of Robin Pope Safari’s new Kuthengo Camp in Liwonde National Park.

And while the country is known for its age-old ancient treasures, new finds continue to be uncovered. Last summer, archeologists discovered two important artifacts: an ancient pyramid and a pharaoh’s head.”
